Review: Jesus Christ: In the Name of the Gun, Episode 1
Jesus fighting Nazis. That’s the concept behind the latest biweekly web comic by Eric Peterson and Ethan Nicolle and published by Bad Karma Productions. The story begins with God returning to heaven after a prolonged absence and Jesus gets into a fight with Him over whether or not he should be stopping suffering on the Earth. God, who is ambivalent toward the suffering of people and doesn’t want to intervene in the affairs of mortals, leaves again and Jesus runs off to kick Nazi ass and prevent WWII.
Jesus gets reborn back on earth in Russia and, in 1939, at the outset of the war, he leaves for Germany to assassinate Hitler. Unfortunately for Jesus, Ernest Hemingway beats him to it and the story just gets crazier. I’ll just say that there are hilarious uses of Jesus’s powers that I don’t want to spoil here. It’s just too funny reading them in the comic.
If the story wasn’t good enough by itself, the comic is also well-drawn and though it’s a web comic it is formatted like a comic book. The pages are well laid out and there are many cliffhanger moments that keep you reading and wanting more. The creators have just announced that they will be releasing the comic as a book to be sold in stores along with a Jesus side-story and I cannot wait to but it.
In short, Jesus Christ: In the Name of the Gun is an amazing story with hilarious dialogue and action and well drawn art that combines to make a great comic. Everyone should at least check out this comic, it won’t cost you anything, and if you’re into religious or historical satire you’ll find it especially funny.
